Dr. Garrett Allman
Music Director and Conductor, Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra
Garrett Allman is celebrating his thirty-eighth season as Music Director and Conductor of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and Chorale. Emeritus Associate Professor of Music at Illinois College, he served for thirty-seven years on the music faculty of Illinois College, where he directed the Concert Choir, the Wind Ensemble and the Brass Ensemble, was director of piano studies and accompanying, and taught courses in music theory, conducting and music appreciation. He continues to serve on the faculty as an adjunct professor.
Dr. Allman made his European conducting debut with the St. Petersburg Camerata, The Orchestra of the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia.
He has guest conducted the Pottstown (Pennsylvania) Symphony Orchestra, and conducted the Spokane Symphony Orchestra at the Festival at Sandpoint, where he worked with the eminent conductor and composer Gunther Schuller. Additional activities have included an invitation to assist in conducting the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, as well being selected to conduct in the American Symphony Orchestra League Conducting Workshops, the Dartmouth Conducting Institute, the Conductors Guild Summer Institute, and the Aspen Music Festival. He also served as conductor of the Opera Theatre of Springfield.
Active as a pianist, Dr. Allman appears regularly as collaborative artist and soloist. Performances have included recitals with baritone Ryan Kuster, soprano Karen Fergurson, and Illinois College faculty and students, as well as a concert with the Walden Chamber Players. He has also performed concertos with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra in the dual role of pianist and conductor. Dr. Allman has taught on the music faculties of Pacific Lutheran University and Dordt College.
Dr. Allman holds degrees from Pacific Lutheran University, the New England Conservatory of Music and the University of Iowa.
